Influenced by the artistic atmosphere of the city created by the great masters – Lissitzky, Malevich, Pen, Falk and Chagall – Pavel Shappo began his creative career in Vitebsk, Belarus, graduating from the Faculty of Graphic Arts. His artistic talents embrace many fields; he is for example an acclaimed set, production and costume designer for film and theatre, as well as being active in interior design and multimedia projects and installations in several countries.

Painting, however, remains his main passion, and his works have been regularly exhibited over the past twenty years in Belarus, Russia, USA, Spain and Italy. Selections of his art have been acquired by the Vitebsk Art Museum and the New Jersey Museum of Russian Art, along with numerous private collectors across Europe.

Movement is the main principle of Shappo’s life, and the concept and defining strategy behind his art. His works might be likened to literary sketches, complete with an intriguing ‘incompleteness’, whether of a phrase, an emotion, an image, or ultimately an action. Everywhere, his eccentric images ‘catch’ with their surprise and provocation.
