Russia: Far From Black and White

Art-centre Exposed presents a photography exhibition by Barry Cawston.

Barry Cawston is an award-winning photographer from the West of England who has travelled extensively across Europe, America, Africa, and Asia. He has also long been fascinated by the people and cultural influences of Russia.

In autumn 2019, a large-scale exhibition of this series was presented at the Marble Palace of the State Russian Museum in St. Petersburg. Now, for the first time, this exhibition will be shown in Moscow at Exposed Art Center, from December 11, 2025 to January 31, 2026.

Through the lens of award-winning British photographer Barry Cawston, we are given the opportunity to see different, diverse, and contrasting views of Russia — from Arkhangelsk in the north to the Caucasus Mountains in the south — captured by the photographer in 2017–2018.
“Global changes in the world fundamentally affect human perception across all spheres and processes that are so familiar and everyday to us. In the moment, we may miss something, and therefore we are forced to respond reactively to these challenges. He managed to capture unique states of calm, as if of slowly flowing time, referring to warm memories of the recent past — a space in which one wants to remain alone with one’s thoughts, which in turn gives an impulse for measured actions in the present,”
— Dmitry Matveev, Art Director of Art-centre Exposed.
